Handmade Turkey Wing Brooms in Ireland – The Artful Weaver

There’s a special kind of beauty in a tool made slowly, by hand. My handheld turkey wing brooms are one of those small, useful objects that bring a touch of Irish craft and natural simplicity back into everyday life.

At The Artful Weaver, I make each broom by hand in West Cork using broomcorn fibres and traditional techniques. These brooms are compact, strong, and beautifully shaped — perfect for sweeping kitchen counters, hearths, craft tables, shelves, or any small space that needs a quick tidy.

They’re functional, natural, and timeless. And because I make them one by one, no two are ever the same.

What Is a Turkey Wing Broom?

A turkey wing broom is a flat, fan-shaped hand broom traditionally used for:

  • sweeping crumbs off tables

  • brushing shavings off a workbench

  • cleaning hearths and stoves

  • tidying up small floors or corners

  • sweeping sand from doorsteps or boots

Unlike large household brooms, turkey wing brooms are compact and easy to keep within reach. They’re sometimes called hearth brooms, table brooms, or wing brooms.

Mine are made from natural broomcorn fibres bound tightly by hand, then shaped into that classic sweeping wing.

How I Make My Irish Turkey Wing Brooms

Every broom begins with broomcorn — a strong, flexible plant fibre perfect for sweeping.
The process is slow, meditative, and entirely by hand:

  1. Sorting the broomcorn into lengths

  2. Creating small bundles and binding them under tension

  3. Bindinf the broom with strong cord (nylon is the only material that can withstand the tension — natural fibres snap)

  4. Shaping the wing into a smooth, beautiful fan

  5. Trimming and finishing so the broom sweeps perfectly

There’s no machinery, no mass production, and no rushing.
Just natural materials, simple tools, and time.

Irish-Made Handles From the Land Around Me

When possible, I use handles gathered locally here in West Cork:

  • Willow bark I harvest in spring

  • Hazel and hedgerow branches collected on mindful walks

  • Or smooth wooden handles chosen for comfort

I love when a broom carries the story of place — something grown, harvested, and made in Ireland.

A Small Tool with a Big Purpose

People are often surprised by how useful a small broom can be.
A turkey wing broom is ideal for:

  • kitchen islands and counters

  • craft spaces and studios

  • fireplaces and stoves

  • brushing sand off shoes

  • tidying shelves and window ledges

  • workshops, sheds, and garden tables

It’s one of those humble tools that earns its keep quickly.

Sustainable Craft, Made in West Cork

Sustainability is at the centre of everything I make.

  • I use natural fibres wherever possible

  • Handles are foraged or locally sourced

  • I harvest and dry willow bark by hand

  • Packaging is simple and low-impact

The only non-natural part is the binding, but nylon is essential — it’s the only cord strong enough to handle the tension required for broom making.

Every broom is made with respect for the land, the materials, and the tradition.
